Have you ever wonder what's inside the typical desktop computer? Then, this is the right page for you!
A typical desktop computer consists of a computer system unit, a keyboard, a
mouse and a monitor. The keyboard and mouse are input devices while monitor is an output device. On the other hand, computer system unit is the enclosure of other main components in a computer. Sometimes called as the computer case,
computer chassis, or computer tower which are made of steel or
aluminum, but plastic can also be used.
The following are the different hardware's found inside the computer system unit:
1. Power supply unit (PSU) converts mains
AC (Alternating Current) to low-voltage regulated DC (Direct Current) power for the internal components
of a computer. Some power supplies have a manual selector for input voltage, while
others automatically adapt to the supply voltage.
2. Hard disk drive (HDD) is
a storage device used for storing and
retrieving digital information. An HDD retains its
data even when powered off. Data is read in
a random-access manner, meaning individual blocks of data
can be stored or retrieved in any order rather than sequentially.
3. Optical disc drive (ODD) uses laser light or electromagnetic waves as part of the process of
reading or writing data to or from optical discs. Some drives can only
read from discs, but recent drives are commonly both readers and recorders,
also called burners or writers. Compact discs, DVDs, and Blu-ray
discs are common types of optical media which can be read and recorded by
such drives. Drives are usually described as
"CD" "DVD", or "Blu-ray", followed by
"drive", "writer", etc.
4. Motherboard (also know as the main circuit board), holds the important components of the computer system like the central processing unit (CPU), memory and other connectors for its peripherals.
5. Expansion card (also expansion board, adapter
card or accessory card) is a printed circuit board that
can be inserted into an electrical connector, or expansion slot on a
computer motherboard, back plane or riser card to add functionality to a
computer system via the expansion bus.
